Translation
OBLATION TO FORE-FATHERS
Offering to Agni who bears food for the sages. Offering to Soma who accompanied by the fathers. The Asuras (demons) and Rakshas (evil-minded persons), who sat upon the altar, are expelled //1// The Asuras (demonical beings), who roam on the earth dissembling their real figures, take the oblation offered for the forefathers, who are absorbed in the attainment of their selfish desire and occupied with evil aspirations. May Lord Agni remove them from this world //2// O Fathers, enjoy here. Be strong and healthy like the Bulls according to allotted offering. The Fathers enjoyed themselves and became healthy like the bulls according to their allotted portion //3// O Fathers, obeisance to your happiness. O Fathers, obeisance to you for fervency. O Fathers, obeisance onto you for longevity.
O Fathers, obeisance to you for Svadha. O Fathers, obeisance to you for sovereignty. O Fathers, obeisance to you for passion. O Fathers, obeisance to you. O Fathers, bestow upon us houses. O Fathers, what is ours, O Fathers, we always give to you. O Fathers, This raiment clothes for you //4// O Fathers, bestow on me a babe, a youth enwreathed with a garland of lotuses in hand, so that he may attain full humanness //5// O Water, bearers of well-cooked food, butter, milk, sweet waters and disease-dissipating articles and freshening draught. Please my Fathers //6// You are the eradicator of foes.
Attack them like a mighty king equipped with his attendants. Increase your vigor like a wide-spreading net. Fortifying thy swift net, most deadly weapons, facing and defeating the demons, subdue them soon //7// O Agni, Spread with thy tongue like the swift movement of lightning. Destroy the enemies with your winged flames. Unshackled cast thy firebrands over the foes //8// O Agni, fleetest in thy motion; send your spies forward, to destroy the troublesome evil-minded enemy, may he be far or near, so that he may not harm us. May you be the harmless guardian and no trouble sent from you overcomes us //9//
O Agni, rise-up and spread out yourself before us. O atrocious chastiser, burn down our foes. O blazing Agni, who encourage our foe, humiliate utterly like shriveled stubble//10// O Agni, ascend high, punish the enemy who fight against us, manifest your heavenly dynamism, destroy the strong bows of the vigorous enemies, demolish our foes, whether consanguine or stranger. I settle you with Agni’s fiery fervency//11// The exalted endearing sacrifices, equipped with sacred grass, master of physical and spiritual forces, the mighty ones speed on with idolization, make prosperous with oblations the Yajna. May we be happy, doing noble deeds, give joy to Indra, setting Soma mid Gods in heaven//12//
The strong substance of Soma, duly extracted from plants. All strength of Soma, with that joying essence impel with joy the sacrifice, Sarasvatī, the Asvins, Indra and Agni//13// Soma, which was brought by the Asvins from Namuci (the demon), which Sarasvatī poured out for Indra, highly invigorating, full of sweatness, giver of glory, I drink and feed on here//14//Whatever portion of the highly invigorating juice is adhering here, what Indra drank with his strength; I drink and feed that highly invigorating Soma juice with a pure mind//15//
We offer food and homage to our fathers who desire food and homage. We offer food and homage to our grandfathers who desire food and homage. We offer food and homage to our great grandfathers who desire food and homage. O fathers, eat the food we have prepared for you. O fathers, rejoice and make us full of joy. O fathers be satisfied and satisfy us. O fathers, be purified and purify us//16// May fathers, full of resplendence, purify me with a noble life of hundred years. May grandfathers, full of resplendence, purify me with a noble life of hundred years //17// May great grandfathers, full of resplendence; purify me with a noble life of hundred years.
May wise and calm grandfathers purify me with a noble life of hundred years? May solemn great grandfathers purify me with a noble life of hundred years? May I receive full length of life//17/18// O Agni, you purify life, send down upon us food grains and vigorous strength Drive you evil persons far away//19// Purify me the companies of Gods. May intellect with mind make me purify. All the material things purify me. O Jatavedas (learned amongst the born), make me purified//20// O Lord Agni, effulgent with thy pure bright sieve and spiritual force, purify me, and purify the sacrifice//21// O Agni, purify me with the divine knowledge, which was diffused by your pure glistening nature//22//
May Pavamāna with his immaculate nature and being a giver of divine knowledge, purify us. He who is cleanser, make us sanctified//23// O Savitar, God, by both of these, libation and sanctify power, purify me on every side//24// Dear to all the Gods has come the Goddess, she who contains these many divine figures. Through her may we in sacrificial banquets taking our delight be the lords of wealth//25//
The fathers, who in the realm of the ultimate ruler are equal in status and knowledge, their dwelling place are Svadha, reverence. To Gods, let sacrifice be auspicious//26// My parents, living among those who live, are of equal and similar attributes. On me their wealth exist through hundred years in this world//27// I have heard remark of two pathways, i.e. the ways of Fathers and the ways of Gods. On these two pathways each moving creature move around, each thing between the Father and the Mother//28// May my sacrifice bring progeny, with ten brave children, all good objects, physical strength, winning offspring, cattle, spiritual force and safety for my welfare. May Agni make my progeny abundant and confer us food, milk and vigour//29//
May our parents, who are Avrikas not wolfs, knower of truth, acquire strength of battle, deserve a share of Soma. May the lowest, highest and midmost elders equanimity and peaceful in nature inspire us well//30// Our Fathers are Angirasas, Navagvas, Bhṛgus and performer of the Soma Sacrifice. May we follow the advice of these lovely elders and may we enjoy their gracious loving-kindness//31// Our ancient Fathers, most noble, highly rich, come again and again, to our Soma banquet. Let giver of pleasure, desiring for nice food, fulfill all the desires, enjoy eat our offerings at their pleasure//32//
O’ Soma! you are greatest in importance for wisdom. With your wisdom, you are the leader of the straightest path for happiness. O’ Soma ! our wise parents with your direction, apportioned out among the Gods their share of treasure//33// O Pavamāna Soma, our sage Fathers performed their sacred duties by your excellent direction. Fighting unconquered, open the enclosing, enrich us with brave horsemen and confer riches on us//34// O Soma, associated with the sage fathers, spread pleasance and leading a religious life between earth and heaven. So, let us serve you with offering. O Indu, may we become the lords of riches. //35//
O sacred fathers, who sit in an excellent gathering, come, help us. Accept these comestibles we have prepared for you. So, come to us most propitious favour, grant us happiness and keep miserableness away from us//36// I have attained the gracious-minded Fathers, who impart sound knowledge. I know the eternal power of God and His creation of the universe. May those visit our homes, who seated on sacred grass, enjoy pressed juice with oblation, and self-realization//37// May the Fathers, desirable of the Soma, invited to their splendid wealth of oblation, come here and listen the sacred verses, may they preach us and protect us//38// May Fathers worthy of Soma having knowledge of the science of fire come on,
Devayāna (godward pathways). Enjoying their portion at this sacrifice, may they instruct us and yield us protection//39// May the sage Fathers, who cognize the science of fire, come here and take the proper place. Eat the sacred food prepared carefully. Grant us riches with heroic children//40//For those who know the science of fire, and for those who are well-versed in sciences other than fire, enjoy their portion in the midst of heaven. May the Self-radiant God make capable of this long-lived body//41// We call the wise for the benefit of humanity, who drink the medicinal juice of Soma,
who know the science of fire and are true to seasons? May they be benevolent to us, and make us the lords of treasure//42// O Fathers, harm us not for any sin which through human debility we have committed. Bowing the bent knees and seated on the southward we pay you homage. Accept all, this sacrifice with favor //43// O Fathers, grant riches and excellent glory to the benevolent disposed persons and your children sitting near charming mothers. Always give them a portion of your wealth, so that they may gain energy// 44// O Agni Kavyavāhana, cause us to extolment before the Gods. Grant us the mastery which you through praise-worthy fluency conceive fit to be granted to the wise//45//
May Agni, Kavyavāhana, who sways the wise to noble deeds, announce to Gods and Fathers our sacrificial oblations//46// O Agni, Kavyavāhana, possessing the fluency of the learned, bear the offerings with fragrant meals; offer them to the sag fathers who did eat them with Svadhā. O God, eat the food prepared with great effort//47// O Jātavedas, you know well the number of fathers who are here and who are absent, whom we know and whom we don’t know. You know a large number of them and they know you. Accept the sacrifice arranged with food and meritable reverence//48// Now let us offer food to the sage fathers, those who are more brought forward than us and those who followed,
who absorbed in worldly affairs, and those who populate among the wise//49// O Agni, just as our sage fathers, giver of sound advice, devotees of truth, disseminate knowledge, acquire well-behaved wives and ground to reside, remove ignorance and cast away the shadow, so should you serve them//50// In a willing manner, we set you here, over so gladly make you burn and glow? Gladly bring the sage fathers near to eat the sacrificial food//51// Thus, ends Pitṛsaṃhitā//
